The Marmite Virgin

Play

For our Boxing Day show, Paul Johnson tries Marmite for the first time ever. Ordinarily, that should be enough for any show, but we also look at some British problems, wonder what’s going on with New Yorkers’ pronunciation of “hot,” argue about cakes vs. pies, and chat about words that are more rude in one country than the other. Later, James’ mum calls in for the quiz and, unfortunately, gets ornery.

  1. Ref pies – on reflection, there was only reference to sweet, as opposed to savoury (sorry, savory) food. That may partially be due to James now being vegetarian and not tempted by beef and ale, steak and kidney, ham and chicken, pork and apple, lamb and mint pies…. but there are delicious cheese and onion, leek and potato, sundried tomato and feta, chickpea and pesto pies – none of which I saw on offer when in LA. Is pie only dessert/sweet in the US of A?

      • Jamie – just running back through the podcasts for a laugh – lots of them, actually! But you never did answer my question about pies in the US of A. I really wanna know! Could be an idea for a whole new biz, like Cornish pasties have taken off all around London. Every station now has a pasty stall selling not only the original meat and veg variety, but a whole range of other fillings, like cheese and onion (my favourite), and most of those I mention above for pies. Didn’t see anything like that when there. Only apple, pecan and blueberry. Xxxx

  2. It’s true that Americans don’t do savo(u)ry pies. You just never see them. The only one Jenn and I could come up with was chicken pot pie, which is sort of a classic. Texans have a thing called frito pie, which isn’t a pie, it’s a casserole. In fact, none of these could be eaten while standing at a bus stop. The closest thing you’ll see here (except you probably won’t) to a cornish pasty is something called an empanada http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empanada which pops up in El Salvadorean areas. So yes, maybe a pasty foodtruck would be a money-spinner!
