This week, we talk about our recent one-hour jet lag, and I frighten Americans by telling them it’s Mother’s Day. Then, I play a clip of someone trying to identify individual members of the Jackson 5 using only European culture references. Then we talk about how Americans don’t know about the Goon Show, despite one of its members being really famous. Later, my mum takes the quiz, and violence ensues with pins, guns, wellington boots and Robert Blake.
Some links to things mentioned: the always great Danny Baker show, the late, great Leonard Rossiter, the conspicuously white Steptoe and Son, and the Goon Show.
Don’t like the Goons being referred to without mentioning Michael Bentine. Pedantry? Certainly!
Do you remember ‘Potty Time’?
Also Harry Secombe’s religious show, where he used to sing a lot, was called ‘Highway’. ‘Songs of Praise’ was on BBC1 at around the same time, ‘Ski Sunday’ on BBC2 got a lot of viewers!!!
Lovely to hear the lovely ladies on this episode.
Love Always

Naturally I remember “Potty Time.” I always thought Michael Bentine was sort of Ken Dodd, only with talent. Discuss.
I checked with the show’s lawyers, and legally, “Songs of Praise” and “Highway” were the same show. So there.

Different stations. Don’t fucking argue.
I remember listening to them when they first went out on the BBC Home Service….. but I am showing my great age there! Xxx
That was on an enormous old crackly radiogram which took up half the room! Also heard “Listen With Mother” on that…. “Are you sitting comfortably, children? Then I’ll begin.” All terribly, terribly English!!
Much love,

I ‘hated’, with venom, another ‘wireless gem’ . . . ‘Sing Something Simple’. Every Sunday 6pm on the radio. Our dad would sit and wallow in his own heaven, as this horrible atomosphere of ‘school in the morning’ loomed closer and closer!
PS: Can I interest you in medium-grade skin cream from Tijuana?
